Glasscutter & Brain Gel Radio - Disambiguation

New track at last!  I’ve been hard at work on the forthcoming NYMPHOMANIA EP, Toad Expeditions Vol. 1, but I’m saving that stuff for when it’s done.

The Angle album that has been in the works for a long time, around 2 years.  It’s somewhere between a split and a full-on collaboration between Griffin and I…  This time it actually sounds a lot more like our respective pseudonyms than with Pangaea; there are a lot of beats and Glasscutter-esque song structures and as well songs that ended up very similar to my many guest appearances on the various BGR records.   All that needs to be done for the album now is vocal work, and I’m going to be making a concentrated effort on that this summer.

I finished the first track “Disambiguation” today and it shows off the shimmering, melodic pop side of both of our music.  Griffin gave me this short, uncharacteristically catchy, loop driven track and it wasn’t hard to think of something to sing over it.  A refreshingly simple song for us.

Romantic Poems

By popular demand, here are the two interpretations of Romantic Poems I did for class.  Firstly is a scintillating, harmonized vocal rendition of “Sun and Flesh” by Rimbaud.  Next, there’s a more freeform take on the second page of Mallarme’s “Un Coup De Des”, which begins “SOIT…”

I Luv Your Girl Remix

In the grand tradition of Burial, I’ve decided to mutilate an R+B track into something lonely and confused.  I spliced up and processed  “I Luv Your Girl” by The-Dream by hand, completely without the use of any sequencers or  tempo grids.  Every sound in the mix was sampled from the original song.  In honor of Wesley Willis I’ve titled it the “War Hellride” mix, referring to the name he gave to the episodes in which he was attacked by his demons.

Disco Hospital - Hysterical Marker EP

The first collaborative efforts NYMPHOMANIA and PLANET QUESTION MARK (who together have formed DISCO HOSPITAL) have come to fruition in the form of HYSTERICAL MARKER EP.  A whirlwind of constantly shifting beat patterns subtlely constructed so as to become their own language.  Vicious, hard hitting, relentless, wildly psychedelic.  Occasionally, the violence drops away to reveal a lush, melodic world beneath.  These smoothly mixed and densely composed 28 minutes hint at dozens of styles and subgenres, from the coldly complex sounds of IDM to minimal, steady pulses that linger in the subconscious.  Music for when you need to grab reality by the neck and force yourself to transcendence.  Play loud.

Nymphomania - In Public [EP]

finalcover-morefinal

Apparently, it’s already that time again!

IN PUBLIC, the third EP from NYMPHOMANIA and the first to really be a serious piece of work, is complete.  Pushing the sound of the last couple releases into new levels of pulse pounding psychedelic meltdown, this release incorporates elements new for the Nymphomania project.  My characteristic layered vocals creep into several of the tracks, still assuming a less dominant role than in the Glasscutter releases.  IN PUBLIC is another 28 minutes of continuous rhythm that will take you from melodic minimal techno pop  to hard acid to noise and everything in between.  A true labor of love, this one wastes no  time and takes no prisoners.

Revelation Season: Undressing the Death

undressing-the-death-final-cover-21

At long last, the sequel to Radioactive Daydreams is completed.  A dark, chaotic, harrowing and deeply personal album as dense, layered and concise as I could muster.  51 minutes of my most intense, boundary pushing music, evoking the alien, the demonic.  Originally inspired by the indescribable feel of a dream I had, and subsequently transcribed, more than 2 years ago in December 2007.  More than any other album of mine, this is a journey through my unconscious mind, and an attempt at expressing the inexpressible through abstract and unconventional means.

In light of the fact that Undressing the Death IS a sequel, I’ve decided to make the original Revelation Season, Radioactive Daydreams, available on this blog.  It’s one of my most tuneful, warm and human pieces of work, featuring not only the vocal layering that dominates Undressing the Death but some more rock-oriented guitar playing at times.  Its theme is one of sparkling, shimmering nocturnal purity.  Its relation to the Undressing the Death has diminished since both were originally conceived, but there are still important parallels.  “Fades Into Aum”, for example, from Undressing the Death, is the companion piece to “Floods Into Aurora” from Radioactive Daydreams, sharing several main melodies.  “Fades Into Aum” and “Crystalline Red” share an ending.  There’s more detail to notice if you’re paying attention.

Disco Hospital - Phantom Hexanchus

NYMPHOMANIA and PLANET QUESTION MARK have joined forces to create a wild, hallucinatory, unbelievably complex 9 minute IDM epic inspired by the vicious virtuosity of Aaron Funk and Autechre.  When together, they use the name DISCO HOSPITAL.  This track is from the forthcoming release SNARL OF WINTER. Stay tuned for more news.

Nymphomania - Color Spray

Here’s a blissed out pop song, for once.  Still in line with the minimalist aesthetic of Nymphomania, though.  2nd track of the forthcoming EP, In Public, another half an hour or so of continuous rhythm.  It’s easily the most diverse, creative and polished of the 3, in my opinion.  It’s also the first to feature vocals, although still in limited quantity.  It’ll be done in a week or two.  Happy thanksgiving.

Nymphomania!

cover5

The second Nymphomania EP has been completed, titled simply Nymphomania! In sharp contrast to the first EP A Holy Art, this album is a fast paced, energetic beat driven piece of continuous rhythm, around 27 minutes in length.  This release is intended to be the thesis or statement of intent of the Nymphomania project, exemplifying a style pure, meditative and calculated and yet  also primitive and trance-inducing  in its minimalism.  I’m effectively taking what I like about trance and other kinds of techno and dance music and making something with it that may or may not end up seeming similar.

Nymphomania - A Holy Art

“A Holy Art”, the first release under my new pseudonym Nymphomania, is an EP of ambient minimalism created with very limited means in a series of intense sessions during a very emotional and eventful period of my life.  The songs are built from pulsing, washing synth lines and rhythmic filters.  They create rhythmic and emotional spaces with carefully chosen tones.  This is my entry into the genre of ambient music, in the classic Eno sense.

It is important to note that, at the time of creation, the process of creation was undertaken with extra-musical intentions, as well.  It was my hope that the sounds of the drones could influence the energies of my immediate surroundings.  Such extra-musical intentions are more thoroughly described by the words in parentheses in the track titles.  The title “A Holy Art” refers to the ancient and sacred practice of creating drone.
